Both an MBA with a concentration in information technology (IT) and a master's degree in information technology prepare students for IT leadership positions across industries.

While each track offers advanced training in information technology and managerial concepts and practices, the MBA in IT allows students to develop a broad set of business skills that transfer to other arenas.

In contrast, the highly specialized master's in IT offers students the opportunity to focus almost exclusively on issues related to information technology and IT management.

MBA in IT Degree

The curriculum for an MBA in information technology generally involves real-world corporate management and business concepts that teach project management in a technical environment and impart methods to link corporate strategy to technical innovation. Additionally, students should expect to receive management-level training in core business areas like finance and economics.

Master's in IT Degree

Course work for a master's in IT typically involves the study of contemporary information systems and emerging technologies in the field. Students also receive advanced training in IT concepts and strategies, the creation and implementation of IT solutions, and management of information systems. Some colleges offer specializations within a master's in IT program; examples include system design and development, network architecture and design, and health information management.

With the credential of a master's or an MBA in IT, graduates qualify for managerial and senior-level roles within the information technology industry. Many find employment as key contributors and leaders in business analysis, systems design and software development; others seek opportunities as information technology consultants.
